Plastic is a common material used by many, daily. As plastic is less expensive, it is one of the most widely available and overused items. Rapid urbanization and population growth increase the demand for cheap plastics. Plastic, being a durable and much affordable material, is utilized in many ways from packaging materials to plastic bottles and containers, straws to plastic bags etc. 

It being cheap also makes us have a disposable mentality i.e. we don’t use it judiciously and don’t value it to save or reuse the products again. When disposed of, it does not decompose easily and pollutes the land or air nearby when burned in the open air.

Polluting plastics can affect the world’s tiniest organisms like planktons. If they ingest plastic, they get poisoned which also serves as a threat to the larger animals that depend on them for food. 

This can cause a whole problem in each step further along the food chain. Furthermore, it also suggests that plastic is present in many animals such as fish that many people eat every day.
