When it comes to advertising in schools, Channel One News is the worst-of-the-worst. Every day children in schools with Channel One are forced to watch commercials during taxpayer funded class-time. Schools showing Channel One lose a full day of instructional time each school year just to the commercials.
It's time to stand up to advertisers who steal class time to exploit a captive audience of students. Our first target? Kmart, which is advertising its back-to-school clothing lines on Channel One this fall. If we convince Kmart to pull its ads—and demonstrate that advertising on Channel One is bad for business—other brands are sure to follow suit.
I am writing to urge you to stop advertising on the in-school network Channel One immediately. I am appalled that you are usurping school time, paid for by my taxes, to advertise “First Day 2,” your own interactive advertising, to a captive audience of schoolchildren. If you trusted the quality of your brands, you wouldn’t force-feed commercials to students who have no choice but to watch.
I will avoid Kmart during this back-to-school season until you stop commercializing children’s classrooms.
