Help gain Adidas factory workers more rights!
Why this petition matters
Dear CEO of Adidas, Kasper Rørsted, and to whomever this may concern,
First off, we would like to acknowledge the fact that you have created worker hotlines which give over 300,000 workers in China, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam an ability to make anonymous comments and concerns regarding working conditions via smartphone applications. Additionally, in 2016 your attempt to create a pilot project in China with certain apps for the Chinese factory workers to also express concerns is admirable. We applaud these actions of trying to create better conditions in your factories through technology. Although you have made a few steps towards improving workers rights, there are still many areas that could improve including the UDHR right to rest and leisure- like the limitation to working hours (article 24), and the right to adequate living (article 25). It is evident that you have been accused of giving poverty wages to the chain workers who make the football shirts and boots worn by the players and supporters for the FIFA World Cup.
In addition, most of your sportswear is made in Indonesia where 80% of the garment workers are women and earn between EUR82 and EUR200 per month. These wages often do not cover the basic needs of the workers and is also MUCH less than the EUR363 that the Asia Floor Wage calculates to be the amount of money families need to have a decent life. There were also reports in 2017 that your Yeezy sneakers were being made in sweatshops by laborers who were forced to work excessive hours and paid very low wages, which resulted in you being charged a 45,000 dollar fine. You violated California state code of regulations by failing to establish, implement, and maintain a written Injury and Illness Prevention Program and one of your employees, Brian Gant, said that he had been seriously injured when a sole press machine tipped over while being moved”and he said this fell on his hand causing him to have serious injuries. All of these examples prove the ways you are not upholding multiple UDHR rights which results in many areas of improvement for you as a company.
Thank you for reading this important letter, and in advance for your signature!
Sincerely,
Mallory Peterson and Carly Elbaum
