Centre Student Group started this petition to Centre College Administration

Dear Centre Community,

For some time now, we Centre students have taken issue with Centre College’s complacency regarding the Confederate monument located across from Pearl Hall.

This statue was placed over fifty years after the end of the Civil War and within living memory of the public lynching of an African American gentleman on 24 December 1866, during which a white mob forcibly removed Al McRobards from jail and summarily executed him by hanging in a park. It was within the context of public lynching and the proliferation of Jim Crow practices that the statue declared, ‘What they were the Whole World Knows’.

In the action of a nationwide racial reckoning during the summer of 2020, the Centre College faculty started institutional conversations with administration about the presence and the history of the statue, and larger conversations about racial justice. However, the statue has not been relocated yet despite the numerous attempts to call attention to the gravity of the problem.

After taking the time to learn about the statue’s history and debating amongst ourselves—we urge for a prompt call to action. Below is a link to a website detailing the history of the statue. Please take time to read through this statue's history, our full petition, and historical timeline. Urge the College to take action.
