Central Washington University Students started this petition to Central Washington University President James L Gaudino and Vice President Kremiere Jackson

The novel coronavirus(COVID-19) has infected over 114,430 people and over 4,000 people have died globally, which exceeds past SARS and MERS epidemics.

At least 23 people have died and over 162 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 in Washington state alone. There are 26 total deaths and 550 confirmed cases in the USA.  Most of the USA Coronavirus cases and deaths are in Washington State. This is a state of emergency. Though there are currently no reported cases within the immediate CWU community, it is impossible to know the extent of the threat. The virus may lay dormant in the body for over two weeks before symptoms emerge. CWU students commute to King county every weekend where most of the infected individuals reside. Kittitas county, a small county, already has its first confirmed case. This virus is spreading quickly through Washington state.

Once the virus spreads, it will have many unforeseen consequences, direct and indirect. As students, we place great priority on our academics, but right now this event must take precedence.

We are asking James L. Gaudino, the President of Central Washington University Ellensburg to take the initiative to make online classes available in order to stop the spread of this deadly virus. In-state colleges such as the University of Washington, Seattle University, Eastern Washington University, and Yakima Valley College, to name a few, have stopped in-person classes. Colleges that are located in states with significantly fewer cases are taking preventative measures by conducting online classes; These universities include Princeton University, Standford University, UC Berkely, and Columbia University. Why is it that Central Washington University has not taken preventative measures to protect its' students when the vast majority of the deaths and confirmed cases are in WA state?

We all know the risks COVID-19 poses to the public, particularly those who are children, elderly or have compromised immune systems (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, kidney disease, etc.) It is our duty to keep students, their families, and the community safe.

As proactive individuals, feel free to reach out to local news stations and CWU President, James L. Gaudino about this petition. Let us make our concerns known!
