It was found recently 11 out 30 fish purchased in the open market of Chintadripet & Kasimedu in Chennai were found to contain Formalin, which is a very dangerous chemical.  Formalin is a highly toxic systemic poison that is absorbed well by inhalation. The vapor is a severe respiratory tract and skin irritant and may cause dizziness or suffocation. Contact with formaldehyde solution may cause severe burns to the eyes and skin.  It is also one of causes for Cancer at a later stage.  (See the news item:- https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/fish-samples-in-chennai-test-positive-for-formalin/article24367321.ece  Some of the traders who purchase perishables (vegetables / fruits / Meat & fish) in bulk use chemicals to ripen the fruits early & also preserve the perishables for a longer time.  This is unscrupulous & unethical business practice which can be stopped only by the State & Central Governments.  People who are used to eating non vegetarian food generally go for fish & chicken which costs lesser than mutton.  Even during the mango seasons it was reported that some traders were using chemicals to ripen it faster and preserve it for a longer period.  It is very pathetic that these dangerous acts are not being dealt with an iron fist.  We suggest the Government to immediately arrest these people who are indulging in these kind of acts under the Goondas act or NSA & should be put behind bars for not less than 5 years.  Stringent punishments & laboratory test quite often will definitely put an end to this problem.
