Dear Central High School,

As you all may know, many students, parents, and even community members have been complaining about the completely unexpected change to the traditional senior class graduation order. You may initially ask, “Why does it matter what order the senior class graduates in?” At first glance, it is just another one of the many traditions we have at Central High, but if you look a little closer, it is truly apart of the foundation of this school and the entire Central Community School System.

After discussing this with many senior class students, teachers, and administrators, I have come to the conclusion that we need to uphold this tradition through all means necessary. Academic excellence is something we are taught to strive for every day in the Central Community School System. Of course, there are multiple routes to success, but academic success is the foundation that has been laid before us since our first days in this school system. At the end of the day, a student is receiving his or her diploma based on being academically satisfactory in the required courses and tests. Our school system prides itself on the notion “and not or.” Which can be interpreted as anything beyond academics is extracurricular, which could also benefit a student’s array of skills.   With the proposed graduation order, Central High School fails to properly recognize the students who excelled in its foundation: education. I have decided to start a petition to protect this valuable custom. With an overwhelming amount of the senior class supporting this cause, it is imperative for the administration to continue this invaluable tradition.

For the last four years, our senior class expected to be ordered in this traditional manner. The people who excelled, expected to be rewarded for their diligence and commitment to academics. To be all of sudden denied this tradition, we expected for four-plus years is tremendously appalling. For one to a handful of faculty members to decide the outcome of this situation is unfair and tyrannical. I whole-heartedly agree that most students and teachers at Central High School believe this timeless tradition should be untouched. I believe at the very least it is our senior class’s decision since it is our only high school graduation in our lifetimes.

Yours truly,

Harlan Jerro
