A change in the schedule for middle schools in the Central Bucks School District has been brought to the attention of many. The Board needs to make budget cuts, and since teachers are unwilling to cooperate, the students are now the ones to pay the price, having to adapt a new schedule that will reduce the amount of classes (teachers to pay) a student can take.
The proposed new schedule has no real benefits and would only cause harm to the students. It is not taking these students into account, but rather ignoring their needs. It is simply an idealistic approach to changing the middle school schedule, and serves no purpose. The "core" of learning is sufficiently covered within the current time frame permitted by the schedule of 8 periods we observe now in our schools. Changing the schedule will only serve to complicate learning for the students and prevent them from exploring a wide range of "specials" or elective classes. Students in a music program are perhaps the hardest hit by this change, as those that put their all into their music classes will be denied the chance to explore other electives. For some of us, music, art, and technology is an irreplacable part of our lives. It is our passion; it drives us to work harder. Taking away the arts is equivalent to taking away our passion for learning.
In the grand scheme of things, adding a mere 10 minutes to a class in order to "protect the core" will in fact not provide any more help. As it is, students are receiving a sufficient amount of core learning. Removing practically all electives is going to prevent students from being exposed to a variety of subjects that will help them grow as they progress through their schooling. Taking away the arts is just as detrimental as taking away the core classes in an education.
