Union Nurses started this petition to Chief Operating Officer, Centinela Hospital Medical Center Mohammad Naser and

We, the Nurses at Centinela Hospital, are disappointed and demoralized by the ongoing deterioration in working conditions, lack of support and ongoing unsafe short staffing. As our hospital struggles with record infections, hospitalizations and deaths, it’s hard to imagine that Centinela’s executives’ only plan has been to make conditions worse. All year, everyone has known a pandemic surge was coming. Nurses have urged administration to work together to prepare, plan, and make sure they had the staffing and other safety protocols in place before the huge wave hit.

Instead, all we’ve seen is ongoing cost saving initiatives which are a slap in the face of Centinela’s dedicated workforce the Hospital calls heroes and places dangerous conditions to patients. Nurses consistently become exposed and infected at the hospital. Despite this we give everything we have, risking ours and our families lives.  We also face conditions including:

  • Patients assignments based on numbers without serious consideration of patients’ acuity
  • Unsafe staffing leading to burnout of nurses, resulting in call offs and massive turnover
  • The Hospital continuing non-emergency and elective procedures
  • High pay offered for Travels/Registry simultaneously with minimal pay increases for union RNS, resulting in massive turnover
  • Break relief being provided by a Lead RN who has other assigned duties or not assigned anyone to cover RN
  • Holding patients in the ER and hallways for multiple DAYS waiting for a bed
  • The Hospital’s reluctance to providing adequate bonuses and pandemic pay to retain nurses

The imposed working conditions means more fatigue and more acute distress for nurses, which makes us more prone to mistakes that occur with gravely ill, infectious patients. It means going to work every day, not knowing whether this is the day we will become infected, spread the virus to other patients and our co-workers, and bring it home to our families. It means we are not able to give the care our patients deserve.

We demand the following;

  • Stop all elective surgeries
  • Stop all ongoing visitors till the end of January
  • Provide pandemic pay to ALL nurses who provide care to COVID patients and PUIs, regardless of whether they are on a COVID unit or non-COVID unit
  • Any and all staff members with a working RN license assist units as needed
  • Double the amount of support staff at the bedside
    Assigned RN leadership to assist with bedside care
  • Implement on the spot-On Boarding
