Christine Joyce started this petition to Centerville City Council and

On March 16, 2020, the City of Centerville Ohio unjustly fired Detective Sergeant James Myers, a 25-year decorated police veteran. Sergeant Myers issues all began in January 2018, when he asked for whistleblower protection after reporting the former police chief and a member of the police department’s upper command for potentially criminal wrongdoing related to theft in office, dereliction of duty and conduct which Sgt. Myers felt constituted possession of child pornography. Sergeant Myers' actions apparently upset the new City Manager Wayne Davis. The former police chief resigned while being investigated and it was later discovered a valid investigation into the upper command officer was never completed. Since asking for whistleblower protection, a series of retaliatory actions were taken against Sgt. Myers over the next two years. Sergeant Myers was passed over three times for promotions he deserved, had his admittance to the FBI National Academy rescinded, and he was given a 5-day unpaid suspension for writing a character letter for another employee that the City fired. That employee was eventually paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to go away. The foundation for Sgt. Myers' termination was that he was dishonest for withholding an audio recording that he made of a meeting involving himself, the city manager, and the police chief. The audio recording was legally made and no city rule or policy about workplace recordings existed at that time. The meeting lasted nearly three hours and several topics unfavorable to the City, including the whistleblower investigations were discussed by Sgt. Myers. The audio recording did not become relevant until the city manager and police chief disciplined Sgt. Myers for writing the character letter. Once they did, Sgt. Myers appealed his suspension and eventually produced the recording to exonerate himself and prove the chief of police lied about the facts of the internal investigation. Once the city manager learned about the audio recording, Sgt. Myers was placed on paid administrative leave for nearly four months before he was terminated. The City could care less that Sgt. Myers retained an attorney to protect himself and his attorney gave him legal advice to not disclose the audio recording until the time of the appeal. Sgt. Myers has grieved his termination and will likely have an arbitration hearing this summer. The City of Centerville has since denied his unemployment claim. Several citizens have reached out to the Centerville City Council about this injustice however their concerns have thus far fallen on deaf ears. A Facebook group support page simply titled “Support Sgt. James Myers” was started a week ago and thus far has over 600 members. The group is demanding that the City of Centerville conduct an external investigation into the actions of the city and the police department. The citizens of the community deserve to have complete transparency and a full accounting of the people in charge. Please consider signing this petition and joining the Facebook group page to show support for this cause. I have attached a link to the Facebook Group as well as a Dayton Daily News Article related to Sgt. Myers' termination. Thank you for your support.
