Why this petition matters

Started by Emily Feaster

Last summer, the FDA approved a new drug called aducanumab. This drug is the first in a new class of treatments meant to address the cause of Alzheimer’s disease, which disproportionately affects people with Down syndrome. While we are currently unaware whether this drug will benefit people with Down syndrome, they deserve the same access to medication as their typically-developing counterparts. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is currently considering a coverage plan for aducanumab and the other treatments in its class that would exclude people with intellectual and developmental disabilities entirely, namely people with Down syndrome. More and more people with Down syndrome are being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, with a far more rapid progression than is typical in people without Down syndrome (DSAWM). People with Down syndrome have a 50-90% chance of developing Alzheimer's disease in their lifetimes (DSAWM), compared to only a 32% chance for the general public (DSHS Texas). Please don't allow the CMS to discriminate against folks with disabilities. Please don't let the treatment gap widen. Sign this petition to allow people of all abilities the access to medication coverage they deserve.
