My husband and I are expecting a baby via surrogate on or before May 8th. According to the hospital we are scheduled to deliver at, current CDC guidelines state that the patient may only have one support person in the delivery room. Birth is a beautiful and yet dangerous process, and therefore every patient (surrogate) deserves to have the support person of their choice there whom they feel will best make decisions on their behalf.

We have already completed the process to be our baby’s legal parents, and yet are currently being denied the ability to be present for her birth. Our surrogate has offered to provide our baby breast milk and has carried her for the last 8 months. We have been around one another routinely, and yet now are being told that for our safety, we can’t be there for our baby’s first moments on earth.

With regulations as they currently are, rules will be taking what would have been a beautiful moment of a surrogate watching a family be completed, and parents getting to cut the umbilical cord, and made it cold and heartless.

I understand that safety is of the utmost importance. But, I urge the CDC to let intended parents and surrogates make the best choice for their situation. Every surrogate should get to have their partner there, but every human (even newborns) deserve to have at least one parent there too.

Surrogates and parents have invested themselves into these tiniest of lives. Please allow these first moments to be beautiful, and let every human patient have a voice
