The lack of research regarding indigenous issues stems from inaccurate data collection among indigenous populations. Currently, the CDC only considers the mother's race when determining the race of an infant. This practice particularly hurts indigenous populations since this method does not align with tribal beliefs about race identification. This racial misclassification limits research and advocacy for many indigenous issues; when indigenous people are not being properly accounted for, plights specific to the native population cannot be solved.
