The 2021 NI Census has recently been distributed, with some glaring issues. Although we may not be able to change the census now, we are petitioning for an addendum to some of the criteria to be made available to all those who have participated, or wish to participate, in the gathering of information on the population in 2021.

issue 1;

As the census stands, all participants are asked to record their "sex". This term is binary and for completion, should be followed up with information on "gender".

The options available are Male or Female. These are assigned at birth and of course it is important to know from the start how the population is made up. However a person's "sex" can be in conflict with their identity, and without knowing the gender balance of society, how can adequate services be provided? As it stands there are several more widely recognised gender terms available, none of which are cited here. Nor is there the option to record "other" - an option which appears in several other criteria questions throughout the survey.

We wish for a PS/Addendum survey to be issued allowing for an amendment to this question.

issue 2;

In addition, when being asked about living circumstances, there are several options available around marriage, civil partnership, single and widowed. However there is no option reflecting that many families co-habit without any formal piece of paper declaring their union or separation. This does not negate the fact that this is a family home though and therefore "co-habit with significant other" should also be added. Alternatively an option for "other" should be made available here.

Please sign and share this petition asking for a further consideration to be made on the census criteria based on these 2 areas, and an addendum to be issued based on these considerations.
