The 7th and 8th graders at Bernardsville Middle School are currently not allowed to have their phones during the school day. Many students think this is very unfair.

The issue with this policy is that it denies older students the opportunity to show some pre-high school responsibility, and stay connected with their parents in the case of an emergency. A perfect example of such an emergency just occurred last week when a 7th grade girl got in trouble for having her phone out during lunch. She was texting her mom about a personal issue that she could have gone to the nurse about, but was too embarrassed.

I'm proposing a change to BMS school policy for the remainder of the year. A change that would allow 7th and 8th grade access to their phones in class (if the teacher allows it) and during lunch. If the students successfully follow the rules, then perhaps the policy can remain and if we blow it... then the privilege can be rescinded.

Please sign this petition if you agree that 7/8th graders deserve a chance to prove their maturity when it comes to phone usage.
