The County Council has approved funding the first Sakada Day Celebration on December 20, 2015! December 20 is Sakada Day in Hawai'i.
Iris Viacrusis is the chair of the committee organizing this event. Contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org or 982-9225.
Let him know that you will be there and ask if there is anything you can do, from spreading the word to bringing your friends. Do you know of any surviving sakadas who may be able to attend? Please let Iris know so that they may be honored.
Sakadas were Filipino men imported by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association to Hawai'i as "unskilled laborers" from 1906 to 1946 mainly from the Visayas and Ilocos regions of the Philippines.
This celebration plans to showcase the rich heritage of Sakadas, exhibit their work in the plantation and honor Filipinos who had helped promote their heritage and a strong contribution to the community.
Let's start by bringing awareness to this first ever Sakada Day. It has been long overdue.
