We represent a group of 7th grade students who attend Pemayetv Emahakv Charter School on the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation in Okeechobee, Florida. Our school's objective is to keep our culture alive by learning the Creek language, Seminole history, arts, crafts, and more traditions on top of academics. We feel that it is vital for the state to create a Native American Heritage Month writing and art contest to celebrate our traditions, leaders and community members, as they do for Hispanic Heritage Month and Black History Month. We want to honor our ancestors who fought and died for this land and our people! Helping to spread cultural awareness can evoke positive change in the world!
