We must foster a safe and inclusive environment in Cecil County Public Schools
Sign Our Petition to Help Foster a Safe and Inclusive School Environment for All Cecil County Public School Students.
Preparing students to live in our diverse society must be a goal for every educational institution. As such, schools must be an inclusive, safe haven for the children in our community, and a place where they can have the opportunity to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
At a recent school board meeting, it was shared with our school board members, Dr. Lawson and attending CCPS leadership about harmful and disturbing experiences that our own kids have had to endure. In the span of a few days, two kids were called a slave and the "n word." While one of these incidents is enough to merit an immediate call to action, we know that these are not isolated incidents as other recounts of verbal threats similar to this have also been shared with us in confidence.
After all the public discourse we’ve experienced over the years – especially in the wake of what we witnessed in 2020, it is unacceptable that there is no language in the student handbook that specifically outlines and addresses hate speech incidents like these.
We are demanding a change – and we need your help.
There must be specific language in the student handbook that clearly addresses and condemns hate speech including explicit and implicit racist comments, Islamophobic comments, xenophobic comments, homophobic comments, anti-Semitic comments, sexist comments, and other vile, threatening and/or harassing speech.
Furthermore, there must be appropriate consequences in place if a student engages in this hateful behavior. There must be a clearly defined policy that crucially signals to all students, teachers, staff, and our community at large that this behavior is completely unacceptable and will be forbidden moving forward.
Every student deserves access to a positive, safe learning environment. It is our responsibility — parents, the educational system, and the community at large, to protect them.
Join us in calling on the Cecil County Board of Education change this by signing this petition.
