Elsbeth Cool started this petition to Chicago Department of Transportation and

Through a tragic series of events on April 11th, a driver ran over a person in the crosswalk at Albany & Diversey, dragging the victim several hundred yards northbound on Albany. This intersection has long been a safety issue, given its high numbers of pedestrian traffic, high speeds on Diversey & the vast majority of drivers ignoring pedestrians attempting to use the crosswalks.

Drivers tend to accelerate very quickly in this stretch of Diversey, as there are stop lights two blocks in either direction: at Diversey & Sacramento and Diversey & Kedzie. In an attempt to beat the lights, drivers regularly speed far above the posted 25 MPH limit, endangering pedestrians in the crosswalks.

Adjacent to the four corners of Diversey & Albany are two daycares, multiple large apartment buildings with many residents, two bus stops for the 76 Diversey bus, a large laundromat (LaundryLand forever!), a bike shop (Four Star Family Cyclery - full disclosure: we're the ones starting this petition), and a fantastic restaurant (Superkhana International, which does a significant amount of walk-up/carry-out business). There is a high volume of foot traffic at all hours of the day & into the evening, including many commuters walking to/from the nearby Logan Square Blue Line stop.

With an intersection that required a reduction of speed & more careful navigation from drivers, this tragic & traumatizing event might have been avoided. Given the high volume of pedestrian traffic & constant safety issues, a three-way stop seems an excellent & fitting solution.

As this stretch of Diversey borders both the 32nd & 33rd wards, we are seeking support & action from Alderwoman Rodriguez-Sanchez & Alderman Waugespack to install traffic calming measures at this intersection. Our neighborhood would greatly benefit from swift action to make this street safer for all users (especially the many families & elderly neighbors attempting to cross this intersection every day).
