Provide healthcare workers with HAZMAT suits and implement proper decontamination protocol to fight Ebola

I’m a registered nurse in Texas, where Ebola is hitting home. Two fellow nurses now lie ill, struck with the deadly virus after caring for the first U.S. Ebola patient. Nurses and first responders nationwide are concerned that we’re not properly prepared to handle a Ebola patient in the event he or she needs transport or walks into a medical facility. We are NOT ready for this disease.

Per CDC guidlines, a healthcare professional caring for an Ebola patient in the United States should wear: a fluid-resistant gown, goggles, gloves, and a mask.  I believe that there are valuable lessons to be learned in all situations.  Here, I believe that full PPE as we know it to be in hopitals today is not adequate in preventing the spread of this deadly and highly contageous virus. So I’m asking the Centers for Disease Control: Why is the team decontaminating the nurse’s apartment in full hazmat gear when our health care workers caring for Ebola patients are provided with less than adequate protection?

I’m asking the CDC move quickly to update their current guidelines requireing the use of HAZMAT gear and the implemention of decontamination protocol for healthcare providers caring for patients with suspected or known Ebola Virus Disease in the U.S.

Recently, National Nurses United -- the country's largest nursing organization -- found that 84 percent of its members said their hospitals hadn't communicated any policy about admitting Ebola patients. Without the proper plan and equipment in place to keep us safe, we have a major problem.

Nurses are absolutely loud and clear on their point: they want change and they want it now. It's time we stand up and demand that the CDC provide proper protective equipment to our healthcare workers caring for a patient with Ebola. Please sign this petition and share it to stand up and fight for the people that put their lives in danger to care for others.
