Simple cloth masks that cover the mouth and nose can reduce the transmission of the novel Coronavirus from individuals who my be contagious, but asymptomatic, when they are out in public buying groceries or seeking medical care. The masks create a physical barrier reducing the amount of respiratory droplets emitted by individuals. These cloth masks are cost effective and will not take away from the limited healthcare supply. A comprehensive Cochrane review found that masks were the most consistently effective measure to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. The CDC should mandate that everyone must cover their face amid the coronavirus pandemic when in a public space. Additionally, all staff in assistant living facilities and nursing homes should be required to cover their face with a mask or whatever physical barrier material that may be available to them in an attempt to decrease transmission to our most vulnerable population.
