Jacob Marino started this petition to CDC and

The current policy in place allows for governing bodies to quarantine children for a period of 14 days due to exposure (7-10 under new CDC guidelines, though not all schools & governing bodies have adopted this policy).  Under the current CDC quarantine policy, kids must be completely isolated from their family and be kept in their rooms at all times.  Meals must be delivered to their door and they must have their own private bathroom. They are allowed outside for only 30 minutes a day.  Kids are still being quarantined even if they were wearing masks and social distancing at the time of potential exposure.  This is leading many kids to no longer care about following safety measures if the message being sent is that it won't keep them safe.

This policy is destroying lives.  Children are being quarantined with no consideration to their mental state, emotional health or home situation.  No one is following up to check on how they are doing.  Some children have opted to sleep outside to avoid quarantining in a hostile home.  Science is clear on the damaging affects chronic social isolation has on people.  The American Board of Psychology and Psychology Today has a long list of peer reviewed studies on what Chronic Social Isolation does to a person.  Adding living in the constant fear and anxiety that they could be quarantined at any time.  The damages to a person's mental & emotional health are often permanent, especially when it comes to childhood trauma.

Our goal is to end or drastically change the current policy in place to one that is more pragmatic in preventing spread and gives compassion & consideration for suffering children.  The current policy in place is not working.  This is not about arguing masks, lockdowns policies, capacity limits or politics.  This is about changing a policy that isn't working and is damaging kids.

Here is what we would like to see happen:

-A comprehensive assessment must be given to a child's mental state, emotional health and home situation before a quarantine order is given.  If a quarantine order would mean endangering a child, the child is exempt from the quarantine order.  If a child is forced to quarantine, the school or governing body MUST partner with community outreach programs/ministries to support the child OR must follow up with the student themselves consistently to provide them the support they need and assess their mental & emotional health.  If at any time the quarantine begins to produce damaging effects on the child's well-being, the quarantine is ended out of safety for the child.  A parent, community partner, mental health professional or school counselor are all people who can end the quarantine if they feel it is endangering the child.

If the CDC, PA Dept of Health or Education are unwilling to consider these changes and embrace them as a solution, then our goal is to educate people on what this policy is doing to kids and families.  If nothing else, maybe we can just let struggling kids know there are people fighting for them and they are not alone.  This may just keep one kid from ending their own life, committing self harm or motivated to keep going for just one more day.

Signing this petition is not about helping us, it is about helping suffering children.
