The CDC ACIP Committee are to be commended on the huge effort to protect us all with amazing life saving decisions with vaccine recommendations. They have especially done so with teens and Meningococcal meningitis groups A,C,Y, and W135.
However group B meningococcal meningitis accounted for outbreaks at Princeton University, University of California, random cases among teens and other college students, the gay community and this year, 7 cases at University of Oregon, resulting in 1 death. Several deaths were reported among teens over the last year. Parents who could afford it took their children to Canada for vaccination. The rest were left at risk. They are still at risk! It is rapidly becoming the # one cause of deadly forms of meningococcal disease in the US.
Meningococcal group B vaccines are now available in the US and the committee are hesitating on making routine recommendations for teen vaccination. This will result in disabilities and loss of life among teens and young adults.
Please join me, Frankie MIlley, mom to Ryan an only child who died with meningitis and the hundreds of Meningitis Angels across the country and encourage them to give us a routine recommendation for this life saving vaccine. The life saved may be someone you love.
