Jessica Bauwens started this petition to CCU President Michael T. Benson and Board of Trustees

My name is Jessica Bauwens and I am a sophomore here at Coastal Carolina. Last year, I lived on campus and attended in-person classes when allowed and followed all of Coastal’s regulations regarding COVID-19. Given the circumstances, I was pleased with CCU’s actions in keeping students safe as well as providing the best learning experience possible.

Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for this semester. Currently, Coastal has put in place the same mask mandate as the 2020-2021 school year as well as the same no-guest policy in University Housing. I appreciate the University taking these steps to keep us safe. These same accommodations are not being carried over into academic life and I, as well as my fellow classmates, are frustrated.

I am currently COVID-19 positive and have zero accommodations from the school to help me academically. I cannot attend my classes virtually and am being expected to coordinate learning plans with each professor while simultaneously sick with a virus that has killed 864 people alone in the past week(cdc.gov).

Coastal has restricted us socially but failed to accommodate us academically. If I cannot have a friend over to watch a movie, why should I be forced to sit in a classroom, elbow to elbow with students who may or may not be vaccinated, hoping that a mask will protect me. If I cannot have a friend in my dorm, I cannot sit in a non-socially distanced classroom with no accommodations for when I am sick with COVID-19.

If students can provide a doctor's note, are awaiting testing results and can provide the appointment confirmation, or a positive COVID test, we should be provided with Zoom links to attend our synchronous in-person classes. Furthermore, these absences should be considered excused. Students can be dropped from classes due to unexcused absences in the time it takes for test results to come back.

I understand the University wants us in person, but when you fail to accommodate the rather large number of students who are positive and missing class, I question Coastals true intentions with students' academic success. We all want to be in person, all I am asking is for the University to accommodate the students who are ill and will inevitably fall behind academically due to the University’s lack of policy. I understand we do not have the space to social distance in classrooms, again, accommodate us for when, not if, when, we get sick with COVID-19.

This is what the student body needs academically:

Zoom links need to be provided for students who are awaiting test results or COVID-19 positive in order to attend class
If lectures can be recorded for students to review when they are able to would also be an optimal option as well
A clear policy every professor should implement and follow when a student tests positive and needs extended accommodations
Absences relating to the suspicion and actuality of COVID-19 need to be considered excused
Extension of due dates as seen fit for students who are debilitated with COVID-19

I strongly suggest you consider my solutions to this dire problem and begin implementing this as soon as possible. Some students are here to party, some are here to learn and earn a degree. It seems Coastal is more eager to prevent student partying and socialization over assisting students in earning a degree. What students need are zoom links, and a universal academic plan for each class for when they are sick. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jessica Bauwens
