Decision Maker Response
Lesley Griffiths MS’s response
Jun 15, 2021 — Animal welfare is a priority for the Welsh Government. We take animal welfare seriously and expect others to do so too.
Our larger slaughterhouses, which process the vast majority of animals, do have CCTV and adhere to a protocol jointly developed and agreed by the Food Standards Agency and industry bodies to enable Official Veterinarians access to CCTV footage.
We are committed to working with slaughterhouse operators in a supportive relationship. Via our Food Business Investment Scheme we are supporting small and medium sized slaughterhouses to, amongst other things, install and upgrade CCTV systems. Whilst CCTV cannot replace direct oversight by slaughterhouse management or Official Veterinarians, particularly in very small premises, it can provide objective supporting evidence of good practice. This is why we have made a commitment to require CCTV in all slaughterhouses during this Government’s term.
