Chris Corona started this petition to Principal of Pelican Marsh Elementary Susan Barcellino and

Let me start by saying Pelican Marsh Elementary is a great school with a great staff. They allow parents to eat lunch with their children in the cafeteria or outside in the courtyard. However, the allotted time to enjoy the meal is not sufficient. We watched students dump their lunch directly in the trash, resulting in hungry kids and wasted food.  It was infuriating.

At Pelican Marsh Elementary School, our kids have 20 min which INCLUDES:  time to get to the cafeteria, stand in line for kids that buy hot lunch, and time to clean up.  It does not even allow children time to wash their hands before eating or bathroom breaks.  We find this unacceptable and inexcusable.

We, the undersigned, call on the CCPS to:

1. EXTEND the lunch time to 30 minutes to give students an "adequate time for lunch. NOTE: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that students get at least 20 minutes for lunch. But that means 20 minutes to actually sit down and eat — excluding time waiting in line or walking from class to cafeteria. Here is another article showing the health benefits of a longer lunch period: https://www.realsimple.com/health/nutrition-diet/health-benefits-longer-school-lunches

2. EXTEND recess to 30 minutes. We have to remember and agree that children in primary years have way more energy than adults. By keeping them seated at a desk for majority of the day, we don’t allow them to release the energy. This is one of the causes of fidgeting and lack of focus. Instead of allowing adequate time for recess and lunch, we then take the children to the doctors. They then classify the symptoms as “ADD” and prescribe drugs to children! Why give children pills with side effects instead of allowing more time to eat and play?
