ritika singhal started this petition to Dr. Hrushikesh Senapaty (Director of NCERT) and

"Girls should take special care of cleanliness during the time of menstrual flow." But is everyone who menstruates a girl? And do all girls menstruate?

"Around puberty, adolescents show an increase in interest in members of the opposite sex." But is attraction always towards the opposite sex? And is an attraction even a necessity during puberty?

"She/he...", "him/her"... But is gender binary? Do only two genders exist?

Schools are supposed to foster an inclusive environment for everyone but if education in itself is cis-heteronormative, we are denying queer people, trans people, and those under the non-binary umbrella a sense of feeling included.

So many people from the community feel vaguely disconnected from who they are. They struggle with coming to terms with their identities, not because we are unnecessarily complicating things but because of the gender binary, the heteronormativity: all of this is so deeply rooted that the possibility of not being a part of these rigid institutions does not even strike.

To make society truly accepting, there is a long way to go. There is a lot that schools and society as a whole need to change. But can we at least start by acknowledging this?

CBSE, NCERT, and to all teachers: non-binary people and trans men menstruate too. Some people feel attracted to the same gender and some do not experience attraction at all. And also, please, gender is a spectrum that cannot be fit into the bracket of two pronouns.

School students deserve to know that what they are feeling is valid. Their identity is valid. And they, contrary to the norms the textbooks perpetuate, matter.
