Shea Millsaps started this petition to CBS46 and

As I look at the pictures of the students from Etowah and Sequoyah High Schools in Cherokee County I see see nothing but high school seniors trying to make the best out of this pandemic.  I do not see the students based on their color.  Furthermore, I do not want my son or daughter nor their friends to live in fear for however long this may take.  Wearing a mask is not a guarantee and neither is social distancing.

As a mom of a senior at Sequoyah High School I have tried to teach my son that we are all the same regardless of our skin color.  When I see that a major news source in Atlanta chose to take these pictures and turn them into yet another racial issue, I am disgusted.  By saying “white” students are intentionally posing with no masks and no social distancing, CBS 46 is creating a racial issue that could very much be avoided.

I would like to see CBS 46 and the Meredith Corporation retract their statement and simply call them students.  These two groups of students have more respect for their peers than these reporters will ever have.  It’s media sources like this that are helping keep racism alive just to have a story to tell. What makes it worse is that they are using our kids to do this.  Now if CBS 46 wants a story let them talk about no masks nor social distancing but leave race out of it!
