The city of Nanaimo is the only large city in British Columbia, and largest metro area in Canada that does not have a local CBC Radio service.

Currently , Nanaimo is served by only two commercial radio stations, which produce no local spoken word programming for the community.

there is a college based radio station also, but it’s audience is geared towards those associated with the said college.

Nanaimo does get a repeater signal of Radio one in Vancouver, but the spoken word programming is focused on the Vancouver area , leaving Nanaimo unsatisfactorily served.

in the last few years a station was successfully set up in Kamloops , to provide that city with locally produced and focused content.

This service is also provided to Prince George, Kelowna, Vancouver, Victoria , yet Nanaimo now has a  Metro population well over 100,000 and growing
