A Skatepark In Portrush
A Skatepark In Portrush
For years the urban sports community in Portrush, and the North Coast, has continuously grown – skateboarding, scootering, BMX and rollerblading - yet there is still no appropriate facility in our area.
The local skating community have skated Station Square ever since it was first redeveloped (and the old Portrush Amphitheatre previously) and it has now become the main urban sports hub on the North Coast. However, with the increasing number of participants, spectators and other youth groups using this area, especially during the summer months, this space has quickly become overcrowded and hectic for everyone. Through the years the local urban sports community have consistently lobbied our Council for a skatepark, but we have never been awarded with this dream. Other towns across Northern Ireland now have urban parks but not Portrush. There have been a number of applications made to the Council in the past but they have failed to progress these further. The desire and need for such a facility has always been there but it has always seemed to disappear from our Council’s agenda.
CAUS (Causeway Association of Urban Sports) have been trying since 2013 to secure the lease of land at Metropole Park. It was reported on Causeway Community News and Belfast Live on 16/17th June 2021 that the Land & Property Committee would examine this proposal and we look forward to hearing what the councillors have to say when it is brought before committee in the coming months.
We hope all our local Causeway representatives will fight for our skatepark when it comes to committee and Full Council.
There has been a call for a skatepark in Portrush for almost 30 years now and time and time again we have missed out on opportunities to secure funding.
All we ask is that Causeway Coast and Glens Council recognises and acknowledges the demand and need for a skatepark in Portrush.
We ask that they listen to active skateboarding/urban sports representatives and involve them in any plans going forward.
We want to help design this park and assist the Council, and other parties involved, to create our dream – this is for everyone’s benefit to show what design layouts would work best. A skatepark for Portrush would not only bring so many good people together, but it will shine light on Portrush once again - the talent to be seen here is amazing!
The amount of people that a skatepark would draw to our town should not be underestimated - this is also beneficial in terms of Tourism, which our Council are always so passionate about. This could mean skate jams/contests and many other events that will bring people from all over the country, to have fun in a dedicated safe space, break down community barriers, build friendships and come together as one big community! With skateboarding now recognised as an Olympic Sport this is great time for all communities to embrace the sport and for our local Councils to provide more appropriate and suitably sized 'skate friendly' facilities. This will help everyone to not only utilize our abilities but to learn new skills and sports and ultimately HAVE FUN!
Portrush can have another ‘landmark' for years to come and draw attention to the beautiful seaside town. We would love to see other people supporting this petition to help us achieve our dream! Show Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council that our Urban Sports Community is their priority! This is good for everyone of all ages, for our local and wider communities and it will bring "Port-Magic" back again!
