Restore funding for CT Parent Trust Fund
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
The Parent Trust Fund in CT, which funds the PLTI and PEP programs in Stamford are to be eliminated by Governor Malloy's and the House Republican's latest budget proposals. PLTI in Stamford is supposed to be celebrating its 20th year in Stamford, but with this cut, we will be unable to hold the program in 2017-2018. We have graduated 497 parent leaders through our PLTI, PEP and Parents SEE programs in Stamford and we want future leaders to have to same opportunity.
Our graduates have successfully run for Board of Education and Board of Representatives seats, as well as served on various organizations and civic initiatives ranging from the Stamford Public Education Foundation, the United Way, Reinventing Stamford, Person-to-Person, the Hispanic Advisory Council, the School Readiness Council, the Stamford Junior Women's Club, the Haitian Community Center, the Jewish Historical Society, the Stamford Youth Foundation, Stamford Hospital Task Forces, Stamford Achieves, the NAACP, the Parent Teacher Council, the Housing Commission and more. The PLTI Alumni Association has coordinated several events such as Stone Soup and Community Conversations.
The purpose of PLTI is to improve the lifelong health, safety and learning of children by helping parents and others who care about children develop the leadership skills to make real change – in schools, communities and state and local government. PLTI participants become advocates for children through a community-building retreat; a 9 week instructional course on community, personal development, and parent leadership; and a 9 week civics course. Participants practice communication, public speaking, and media advocacy skills; understand budgets, policy, and laws that effect children; learn how to work in political systems; and complete a culminating community project.
We help parents who care become parents who lead. Won't you help us by signing this petition?
