Prayer and Reparation for Victims of Clergy Sex Abuse

Dear fellow Catholic,

If your heart is broken over the recent revelations of abuse committed by some Catholic leaders, there is something you can do:  Read the letter below, commit to do the prayer/fasting/reparation by signing it, and then share this letter far and wide.

God be with you,

Michael Dopp

To those who have been abused by priests in Pennsylvania,

The release of the Grand Jury Report has broken our hearts. It revealed that against you and many others immense evil was committed. The wicked acts of those involved is sickening.  We are disgusted that such evil was perpetrated and that it was often dealt with in such a cowardly and shameful manner.

The evil actions were compounded by being committed by men who ought to have been trustworthy, compassionate, and good. Instead, they betrayed you, the Church, and God Himself.

We desire your good and so are committing to pray for you personally. We will also examine our consciences, confess our sins, and ask for God's mercy. Finally, we wish to make some small act of reparation in light of the gross betrayal of other members of the Church.

With hope that you will find peace, healing, and restoration in Christ and with a desire to be healed and sanctified so that we may imitate Christ in His self-giving love, we commit to:

  1. Pray 2000 Hail Marys. 1 for each of the 1000 abused found in the Grand Jury Report and, knowing that likely many others were abused, 1000 for those abused but unknown.
  2. Examine our conscience and go to confession every month for at least the next 6 months. We too have let evil into and out of our heart and so need the mercy of God and His forgiveness.
  3. Fast 1 day per week (either bread/water only or skipping a normal meal) for at least the next 6 months in reparation for the sins committed, especially those by leaders of the Church.

May God be with you now and always,

Michael Dopp
