Philippine Catholic Vegans started this petition to Catholic Vegans and

Saint Francis of Paola and his monks were notable not only for their austere lifestyle, but also for their strict diet, which not only eliminated meat and fish, but also excluded eggs, dairy products and other foods derived from animals.

Abstinence from meat and other animal products became a "fourth vow" of his religious order, along with the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Saint Francis instituted the continual, year-round observance of this diet in an effort to revive the tradition of fasting during Lent. Unfortunately, many Roman Catholics had ceased to practice this by the 15th century.

Saint Francis’ veganism was united to a strict moral code, a community life built around the Sacraments, and a deep spirituality centered on Jesus Christ. To be “one with nature” does not mean to be morally ambiguous or to break with religious traditions. For him, a cruelty-free diet and lifestyle need not be a creed.

Veganism, is also aligned to Pope Francis' urgent call to action, through his encyclical, “Laudato Si',” or “Praise Be to You” which raises awareness on the current ecological crisis, hence the need for everyone to have a paradigm shift to allow all sentient beings to live sustainably in dignity.

By proclaiming him as the patron saint of vegans, we strongly feel, that more people will be inspired by his life story and we will be able to promote the same virtue of kindness & compassion to all, both- humans and animals, then it will align everyone to God’s plan.
