Lisa White started this petition to Catholic Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana

In a written bulletin, Rev. Theodore Rothrock of St Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carmel, Indiana, referred to Black Lives Matter protesters as "maggots and parasites." He further went on to call them "serpents in the garden" whose "poison is more toxic than any pandemic we have endured." Mr. Rothrock additionally conflated the Black Lives Matter racial justice movement with militant groups in a veiled statement encouraging "Christians" to promote "peace."

Mr. Rothrock's statements uncover within him an inability and/or unwillingness to learn why this group of God's Children is hurting.

A leader in the church who does not respect, protect, and exercise compassion for ALL of God's children should not be a leader in the church. Through his written, publicized statements, he has proven that he harbors a type of racism that cannot coexist with his chosen vocation. As a "cradle Episcopalian" who was also educated in the local Catholic school, I saw the kind of damage caused by church leaders who fail to outwardly and eagerly love all individuals as Jesus commanded.

This failure of Mr. Rothrock reveals him as unqualified to perform his job, to be a vessel for the Word, to be a role model for parishioners, and to be the hands and feet of Jesus. The Diocese and Vatican should ensure that Mr. Rothrock is not afforded another opportunity to be parishioner-facing since he has made clear that he is just as dangerous to certain groups of God's Children as a surgeon who refuses to sterilize instruments before some surgeries.
