Garrett Kelly started this petition to Catawba County Schools Board of Education

The Catawba County Board of education has decided that the students will be at their most successful beginning at 7:30 in the morning -- they are wrong. There have been numerous studies preformed showing that students (specifically high school aged) preform better in cognitive tasks and tasks that require more focus, later in the morning. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that schools start class at 8:30 or later. changing the schools' start times from the already earlier than recommended 8:00 to 7:30 is not only counteractive to student's growth, but also grossly irresponsible. By being forced to attend school earlier, students will undoubtedly struggle in any class that takes place early in the morning because they will not have gotten the proper amount of sleep, and the early mornings will have disrupted their natural sleep cycle. During puberty, a person's natural sleep cycle (or circadian rhythm) shifts up about two hours, so teens generally stay up later than children and adults not going through puberty. This is not because they are being rebellious and avoiding sleep, it is because their bodies are physically not ready to sleep. Within the same vein, teens also tend to sleep in much later, not because they're lazy or because they stayed up later than they should have; but because their bodies are not meant to wake up as early as fully grown adults. Making the school schedule earlier will negatively affect students' performance in their classes, but it could also have more effects that could be even more dangerous. When school starts early, that is forcing hundreds of young teen drivers to be put behind the wheel in order to make it to school on time. A study conducted by the Committee on Adolescence, Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention stated that, "... have altered circadian rhythms, which contribute to risk of fatigue  Lack of sleep influences attention, learning, and judgment," (Alderman et al). There is no excuse for putting teens' grades, health, and even physical safety in jeopardy just so a school schedule can tailor better to the adults in charge. Please sign this petition and fight for yourself, or your child, or even the students of the future. Thank you ♥
