Why is Catalyst Pharmaceuticals charging $375,000 for a vital medication that was once free?

In December, the company decided — seemingly just because they could — that they would start to charge patients hundreds of thousands of dollars for a medication that has been, for years, totally and 100% free for patients.

The drug is called Firdapse. It is used by patients who are suffering from a neuromuscular disorder called Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (or LEMS for short). LEMS commonly occurs in patients with cancer and is a disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues.

Significantly, the drug is part of a program that allows patients to access experimental drugs outside of a clinical trial when there isn’t another option.

How many patients will suffer and die as a result of this reckless decision motivated by profits? How much does it cost the company to produce or purchase the drug? Probably not $375,000.

So why is Catalyst Pharmaceuticals charging $375,000 for a medication that should be free? Because it can. Sign and share this petition to fight back and ensure patients who need the medication, have the medication.
