Carroll High School is a school located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I am an alumni, having graduated in June 2019. I spent four years at this school, getting to know many different kinds of students. Carroll has an abundant population of students that are members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community, including several transgender and gender non-conforming students.

Recently, Grace Grabner, a current senior at CHS and a transgender girl, was placed on the 2020-2021 prom king nomination list. This list utilized her dead name, even though Grace has been out for 6 years. This is not the first time Carroll has displayed blatantly transphobic and harmful behavior to its students. From barring transgender students from using the appropriate bathrooms to intercepting the advertisement of GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) club meetings, Carroll has a history of invalidating its LGBTQ+ community.

Using a transgender person's dead name as well as misgendering them and treating them as anything other than who they are can prove to be extremely harmful to their mental health. Carroll is not the first school and unfortunately won't be the last to invalidate its transgender students. Those involved in the operations of Indiana and Allen County's education department have the power to make changes to accommodate and support its transgender and gender non-conforming students. Carroll has the ability to change and practice its inclusivity preaches. Help Carroll and other high schools change and support ALL of their students.
