Lindsay Jensen started this petition to Carroll County Board of Education

The purpose of this petition is to show the Carroll County Board of Education that parents and caregivers in our county want to help keep our children safer in school buildings by requiring the use of masks by, at the very least, those students who are unvaccinated against COVID-19.  Children under 12 have not been provided the opportunity to be vaccinated and with the rise in cases due to the Delta variant, our children deserve to be in a safe classroom with protocols in place for reducing the transmission of COVID-19.  With all students back in the schools come fall, very little social distancing will be possible, so the use of masks indoors is even more imperative.  The Center for Disease Control, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Carroll County Health Department all recommend masks for students when indoors.
Several peer reviewed studies have shown the effectiveness of masks.  According to the Mayo Clinic, "A cloth mask is intended to trap respiratory droplets that are released when the wearer talks, coughs or sneezes. It also acts as a barrier to protect the wearer from inhaling droplets released by others."  Therefore, masks not only help protect the wearer, but also protect others from getting the wearers germs.  Hence, children who surround themselves with others who choose not to wear masks are not getting full protection by their mask usage.  The saying, "it takes a village" is quite literally what we need in order for ALL of our children to get the education they deserve while also staying protected from COVID-19.
With the BOE removing the virtual option, many families feel as though their right to free public education is being taken away at the expense of others not wanting to wear a mask.  Students who want to opt into the home/hospital option that the BOE has in place of virtual learning is based upon qualifications and many children may not qualify.  Several children in our school system live with high risk family members and being in-person with unmasked students is not an option.
It is our wish to work along side the Board of Education in hopes of educating the whole child and providing quality education for every student in Carroll County. Please sign our petition to show your support in allowing Carroll County students to receive an education in a safe environment with masks until all are offered the opportunity to become vaccinated.
