The presence of armed SRO’s in Maryland schools only serves to create unsafe environments for students of color. Proposals to place police in schools have resulted in an increasingly punitive system of school discipline aimed at BIPOC. Placement of police officers in schools increases referrals to law enforcement for crimes of a less serious nature. The consequences of involving students in the criminal justice system are severe, especially for students of color, and may negatively affect the rest of their lives. Therefore, lawmakers and school officials should consider alternative methods to create safer learning environments. School safety doesn’t have to mean policing. The budget for Maryland’s Safe to Learn Act should instead be allocated to more nurses, child psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, support staff, and an increase in wrap-around services.

The Safe to Learn Act specifies that SRO’s are not required in every school. Therefore, we demand a legislative movement to suspend or phase out police presence in Carroll County schools. Our goal is to eventually creat police-free schools in all of Maryland. We demand putting an end to the criminalization of black students. We demand access to a safe learning environment without the presence of armed SRO’s.
