Each morning on my way to work I leave my driveway and drive down the street to the dreaded Carp Road and Rivington Street intersection. I feel anxious each time as I stop my car far back from the line to make certain I am able to see the cars coming from the left and right sides. I move my head forward and backwards trying to look past the hydro pole to see oncoming traffic from the left. I look to my right and see trees and bushes so I move my head more to look past those. I pull up further to start counting how many cars are about to enter the bridge on the left and watch the last car in line so I know what colour vehicle is last to enter. Finally, I see no more cars to the left and the right side seems to be clear. I slowly creep up further to take the left turn. Unfortunately, I miss calculated and  now I'm speeding around the corner with a very angry driver honking at me from the bridge. I cut him off. Has this ever happened to you?

Hello, I am Amanda. My husband Nick and I have lived here on Rivington Street just short of four years now. While I love the community here, I very much dislike the intersection at the end of the street. Each time I try leaving to enter Carp road, a part of me hopes that I have done enough to see over the bridge and around each shrub so I don't collide with another car.  I'm sure I am not the only one with that worry and aspire to fix the intersection to make it safer for everyone.

How many of you have rolled into the intersection worried about making a turn? What tricks do you do? Do you pull past the bridge trying to peer at the traffic with hopes that no one is driving too quickly and sees you? Do you stay far back trying to look past the bridge or even on top of it?  How about the summer when all the weeds beside the river and the bush on the right have grown in so you need to look through or past those as well. Either way, taking a turn at this intersection is stressful and dangerous and should be changed for our safety.

On two separate occasions I have personally contacted the City of Ottawa describing the situation. The first time they sent an official out to evaluate. I received an email later that day stating that a small vehicle should be able to see any type of vehicle going over the bridge and to stop at the white line to look before the bridge. They also mentioned that there has not been enough accidents reported at that intersection to send anyone to fix the situation. Let me tell you, my husband and I drive motorcycles and a motorcycle as small as mine cannot see over the bridge. I personally have also had two close calls trying to turn left. I left it at that. A year later I was upset and called again. This time they mentioned that there was no appropriate action they could take for this intersection. They mentioned there is a "hidden intersection" sign and that's all they could do.

We need something to change at that intersection. A stop sign on Carp road or reconstruction of the bridge to make the guardrail less visually obstructive. We also need to cut back on the trees on the opposing side. Might I add it does not help that the speed limit changes from 80km/h to 50km/h and people rarely slow down before coming to the 5 way stop at Carp Road and Donald B Munro Drive even when the speed sensor was working! Also, because of where our house is situated, we often hear various cars getting honked at and the odd time see cars almost colliding with each other.

This is our chance to make the community safer. Not only for the people living on Rivington Street but for friends and family who visit and for the people passing Rivington Street. We deserve to not worry to turn out of the street.
