Make Gosport a Makaton friendly town

Romsey is set to become the first UK Makaton-friendly town and we feel that Gosport can follow in their footsteps!
Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order.
Currently over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton to communicate with others, it is very popular with people with special needs, as well as those with dementia. As Gosport has one of the largest Learning Support Units within St Vincent College, as well as Bay Croft and Crofton Secondary School, we feel that a huge number of people would benefit from a Makaton-friendly community as it would encourage them to interact with the community and build valuable life skills.
Monkey Bizness is a children’s soft play centre for 0-12 year olds. Over the past few years the team have been working really hard to make the centre as inclusive as possible and as part of this all of our staff are trained in basic Autism Awareness and we also have some members of staff trained in Makaton.
In 2009 we were lucky enough to be certified as ‘Makaton Friendly’ by the Makaton Charity. This means that we have adapted the centre to cater for children that use Makaton to communicate.
We would love for local businesses to learn a few simple signs (relevant to the business) in order to help those with communcation difficulties.
