Fire Panthers OC Mike Shula

An absolutely devastating and embarrassing loss against the Bears really pointed out the problem. Our offense missed so many opportunities. Mike Shula called terrible plays, ones that were extremely unnecessary. The defense gave the ball back to the offense so many times. Instead of throwing deep with 5 min left in the game, Mike Shula decided to call for short passes and runs. Carolina Panthers coach Mike Shula has been a below average offensive coordinator for the majority of his four-plus seasons serving in the role. In fact, only during 2015 was he even statistically average calling plays for quarterback Cam Newton and the Panthers offense.

One problem with Shula is his play calling is extremely predictable. There are many times even casual fans will say, “I knew that was coming.” If the casual fan can pick up on his tendencies, then NFL teams know them well in advance.

At times he also overthinks situations and instead of relying on a high-percentage play call sends in something completely opposite. For example against the Bills the Panthers gained nine yards on a first-down Jonathan Stewart run. Second-and-short opens up every pass play in the playbook for an opportunity to take a shot down the field with no real consequences.
