Why this petition matters

Due to Covid, Carnegie Mellon University implemented new gym rules (45 minute limit per session and capacity of 15 people). However, I think the new rules are flawed. I will break down the reasons why based on my personal experience and what other schools are doing.

45 minute per session: This time limit is never enforced. I have seen many people stay in the gym for more than 45 minutes, myself included. I feel bad so most of the time I tried to finish my workout within 45 minutes. I heard what Pitt does is every hour they kick everyone out and bring new people in. This is a way better approach because it is fair for all students.

15 people capacity: There are around 15000 students at CMU and the gym capacity is 15. Pitt has 35000 and their gym capacity is 90. I understand that CMU gym is smaller but based on current rules what happens to me at least is most of the times I have to wait outside for 5-30 minutes to get in.

Most importantly, tuition is getting more expensive even though it's COVID season. Everything is remote, which means CMU is definitely spending less money on resources that were available to students before COVID. And if the tuition is more expensive, I expect students to at least have the same level access to resources like gyms. Hence, I propose CMU to purchase gym memberships for its students at commercial gyms so we can ease the gym traffic on campus and people don't have to wait.
