Petition to the Carlsbad Unified School District Board of Trustees

To ensure equal access to education:

We, the parents and students attending Carlsbad Unified schools, petition the Board to call an emergency special meeting upon receipt of this Petition and approve in-person learning on all school campuses to begin in October 2020, in conjunction with honoring the choices parents made:

  • Open the schools for full-time in-person learning 5 days a week for all students that desire a return to education on campus.

(We respect the option of continued virtual education through distance learning for any student that is not ready to return to campus.)

The full in-person plan complies with all CDPH Industry Guidance components, San Diego county requirements, and even the CUSD Handbook for opening schools. For each day of inaction by this Board, our children fall further behind while students in schools across the country, California and San Diego county reopen and move ahead.

The immediate and long-term consequences of distance learning are far greater that the minimal risk from COVID-19 within these age groups. Students and parents have lost confidence in the Board as a result of its indecision and failure to provide students with their fundamental right to education.

We request the Board to hold an emergency special meeting and approve a 5-day a week in-person model for the students and families who desire to return to education on campus.
