Steven Espinoza started this petition to Carlos Menchaca

Our community has continuously dealt with a silent issue for far too long. For years Sunset Park has been dealing with an environmental crisis. Waste management issues for one has been damaging our community. Yet, there has been little to no improvement. Not enough funding and resources have been provided to challenge this issue. The outdated waste bins placed on each street have been overflowing with trash in just a matter of hours. Trash is tossed in the same bin, whether it’s plastic, electronics, or non-recyclable waste. Our trees planted in front of our homes, businesses, and streets, are an environmental asset to the community. Yet trash has been tossed and placed onto the soil. From empty liquor bottles to scraps of food on the soil. Waste interferes with our public environment. Trash pouring onto our sidewalks, streets, and bike lanes that interfere with ongoing commuters. However, rodents have taken advantage of this issue. The percentage of households reporting cockroaches is 28 percent as stated in the 2018 NYC health report. Rodents are beginning to feast and populate from the waste poured onto the ground. It is a serious health issue in the neighborhood that may spread diseases carried by rodents onto other households.  It is critical for action to be taken to protect and resolve this environmental crisis. I am creating this petition to raise awareness about the issue in order to propose to our local politicians, City Council Member Menchaca and upcoming State Assembly Member Marcela Mitaynes. Help support this cause by signing and sharing this petition! Thanks everyone and hope y’all have a great day!
