To the Carleton Administration:

We would like to draw your attention to the unmet mental health needs of Carleton students. Carleton prides itself as an academically rigorous school but fails to recognize the mental health challenges that accompany this challenging atmosphere. Poor mental health negatively impacts academic performance and prevents full participation in the Carleton community. At a basic level, when Carleton does not offer their own resources, it disproportionately affects those students who cannot afford access to those resources otherwise. Requiring students to seek mental health services off campus is unrealistic, both in terms of cost and time. Considering the mental health needs of Carleton students, the insufficient resources constitute a safety risk to the student population. For a student in crisis, waiting 2+ weeks is not a realistic or safe course of action. When we applied to Carleton, we were promised a “student-focused school”, a focus which is not reflected in the current mental health policies on campus. Given the level of detail and funding expended to provide a quality education and a rich, diverse student culture, it seems like an equally well-developed mental health infrastructure should be a given.

Sincerely,

Carleton Students
