Recieving universal credit and a full time carer for my wife. Advised to claim carers allowance..an extra £350 a month for caring up to 14 hours day in day out. Carers allowance is deemed as an income so is deducted from universal credit. Therefore you gain nothing and can even compromise any council tax reduction. For working people it is deemed as a taxable income so will be reduced by taxation. This allowance should be classed as a nontaxable benefit and not as an income because of this.
