Pregnant women and families in Rhode Island do not currently have access to a full-service, accredited Birth Center since none exists here. The state is in desperate need of such a facility and the Rhode Island Birth Network is asking for your support to make this option a reality.
Due to a recent affiliation, Women and Infants Hospital and Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island are now part of the same Care New England family. At this critical juncture, we have an opportunity to develop a proposal that would give pregnant women and families another option.
The Gentle Birth Center of Rhode Island at Memorial Hospital will be dedicated to woman-centered, family-centered care. The mission of this accredited birth center is to support normal, physiologic birth for low-risk women who desire minimal intervention into the birth process. In addition, the Center will promote gentle birth for newborns, facilitate family bonding through the birth process, and increase satisfaction with the birth experience. The Center will aim to create an environment which features a home-like atmosphere, 3 birthing rooms to ensure reliable access at the time of labor, a family room, and a staff completely dedicated to the Birth Center’s mission.
The philosophy of care will be to practice nonintervention in the absence of complications. As such, the standard of care will include intermittent fetal heart auscultation, no routine IV placement, family participation determined by the laboring woman, freedom of movement in labor, availability of all non-pharmaceutical pain management options, and water birth. At the same time, the Birth Center’s proximity to Memorial Hospital will provide women with immediate access to all obstetrical and emergency services should complications arise.
There has been a movement in Rhode Island for years to make this happen. Let’s make 2013 the year of the Birth Center!
