Stop the academisation of the Diocese of Westminster's schools

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) has created this petition to unite the opposition felt by parents, staff and governors in regards to the proposed academisation and formation of multi-academy trusts as outlined in the Diocese of Westminster Education Commission’s- Academy Strategy and Policy, December 2016.

Our opposition is based on the following:

1) When the NUT met with the Diocese, they admitted that academisation does not improve educational outcomes for children.

In January 2015, the all-Party House of Commons Education Select Committee concluded that: “We have sought but not found convincing evidence of the impact of academy status on attainment in primary schools”. It added that, “it is too early to judge whether academies raise standards overall or for disadvantaged children”[1].

 2) These proposals will lead to a reduction in local accountability and control

Strategic decisions relating to management of schools will be made at the Board of Directors level[2]. Many schools will no longer have head teachers, resulting in a reduction in accountability to the local community. These changes will inhibit the ability of schools to adapt to local circumstances and the needs of individual school communities.

3) Our experience shows that the formation of Multi-Academy Trusts always leads to economies of scale and resultant job losses

Neither in the Academy Strategy and policy nor in Cardinal Nichols response to specific questions posed by NUT are there any guarantees over pay and conditions or job losses. The Cardinal’s letter fails to address the issue stating only that “the significant majority of schools will retain their own head teacher”[3].

We therefore call on the Diocese to drop all plans for mass academisation and the creation of Multi-Academy Trusts.
