I am of the understanding the Caravan Industry in Australia is self regulated. There seems to be NO TOTALLY INDEPENDENT AUTHORITY SUCCESSFULLY ENFORCING THE RULES AND REGULATIONS governing the building of Australian caravans and the compliance of imported caravans. (The term "caravan" includes caravans, motor homes, camper vans, camper trailers, slide-on campers etc.) The growth of the Australian caravan industry is evident. More & more people are living in their caravans or at least using them for extended periods of time, not just for their 4 weeks annual leave.

Personally we are experiencing difficulties rectifying what we feel, are manufacturing faults not warranty repairs, on our less than 2 year old caravan. (Some issues started before it was even a year old). When you purchase a caravan, it would be correct in thinking that it is purchased as a complete item, as is a car. Our caravan came with a 3 year warranty, however as we are learning not every item that came within the caravan is covered.

While owning & living in our caravan and travelling in it throughout Australia for a total of 7 years, my husband and I have met and spoken to 100's of owners of caravans of many varied brands, models and sizes. Sadly good reports & experiences about (many) manufacturers and (some) dealerships are outweighed by genuine concerns, issues, complaints and experiences of emotional stress & financial loss. The topics raised are commonly about, but not limited to: quality control in general (or lack of); 12V & 24V wiring standards; battery/solar power systems not doing as advertised/assured; plumbing standards; water leaks of all descriptions; roof ingress standards; quality of internal fit outs; weight distribution and weight factors; no weighbridge docket recording final finished weight; warranty confusion and issues; nowhere neutral to turn when things do go wrong.....

The set up of an INDEPENDENT AUTHORITY would not only help the consumer, it would also help dealerships, manufacturers and the industry in general. The industry needs to be bought into line in regards to manufacturing standards, warranty clarity and consumer protection standards as expected in Australia. The accountability and care factor in general of many manufacturers and some caravan dealerships seem to be lacking.
